DARST announces its first Visual Laboratory

Billions of photographs are incessantly uploaded to the internet and consumed without any particular attention. Shrinking budgets for media productions result in shallow and fast-to-consume reporting. As a result of this spiral of cultural deterioration we lose the capacity and the drive to aim for excellence, to dig deeper into matters, preferring the safety of superficial mediocrity.

DARST Visual Laboratory #01 aims to inspire photographers and film makers to separate from the mainstream media and pursue personal work.

In two separated workshops and a two month production period in between, you will create a body of work under tutorship by DARST.

WORKSHOP A - Define your story, your language, your objectives and your target. Before moving right into the discussions around your projects, we will showcase a vast variety of visual work and stimulate a research into personal languages and approaches. We will work on a few assignments and develop our project ideas. You will leave with a clear and structured idea of the work that you are going to produce.

Diego Orlando, senior photo editor of Burn Magazine, will give a portfolio review at the end of the Workshop.

During the production we will be in touch and give feedback to your work.

WORKSHOP B - Edit, curate, present, pitch and publish your work.
You will present the work to the class and together we will edit, curate and finalize the projects. Furthermore we will develop an approach to the market and a business plan built around your project and your objectives. Lastly we will analyse different publication options, fundraising methods and how to pitch your work to editors, curators and clients. We will publish the stories produced during the workshop on DARST’s website and publicised them with our newsletter to editors and curators.

The fee is 950 Euro and includes the teaching fee for the two workshops, the mentorship during the production and the accommodation during both workshops in Scicli.

We offer a EARLY BIRD with 10 % discount for those successful applications received before June 1st.

A SCHOLARSHIP with 50 % discount will be awarded to the best application received before June 1st.

You need to cover the transportation to and from Scicli and pay a deposit of 200 euro to validate your application. The deposit will be fully refunded in case the application is not successful.

Send your CV, a portfolio of your work with no more than 25 images and a motivation letter. All in a single pdf of no more than 5 MB to info@darstprojects.com

Final deadline for applications is August 12th.

Both workshops will take place in Scicli, a pearl of density and beauty in the south east corner of Sicily, right at the centre of the Mediterranean sea.

WORKSHOP A: September 3rd-6th.
WORKSHOP B: November 12th-14th.
